River Cruises
River cruising is an efficient and cost-effective, yet elegant way, to explore the major port cities of Europe, Asia, South America, the Nile and here in the USA. These itineraries are ideal for travelers interested in enjoying the local culture, food, shopping, museums and other local attractions. Additionally, unlike ocean cruises, river cruises appeal to those with sensitivity to motion as river waters are relatively calm in comparison.

A river cruise is a wonderful way to relax, watch the world drift by at a leisurely pace and explore the towns, cities and countrysides of locales to whch they sail around the globe.

With well over 150 river ships launched since 2013 and 20 more debuting every year, as well as an increasing number of river cruise lines and itineraries on offer, river cruising is the fastest-growing sector of the worldwide cruise market.

Whether you're in Europe, South America, Asia, the U.S. or Africa, river cruising shares a lot of similarities as well as dissimilarities from ocean cruising. First of which, is that the ships cruising the rivers are much smaller than ocean going ships and a lot more intimate.

In Europe, where the ships are restricted in width and length in order to fit through locks and sail beneath low bridges, these ships offer some of the most visual pleasures along their journey, not to mention interesting ports of call.

Another distinction to ocean voyages is river vessels visit a new port each day, and sometimes even more than one. Some itineraries allows passengers to visit up to four countries in a week. Each itineraries is port-intensive having a busy program of culture-rich shore excursions which are mostly included in the fare and some fee-extra. An actual full day onboard is uncommon with the closeness of the various ports along the way.

Unlike ocean ships, the staterooms tend to be smaller, however they are not lacking on comforts, particularly on the newest ships having hotel-style beds, bathroom with high-quality toiletries, TV and entertainment system, hair dyer, safe and ample storage space, stocked mini-bars, suites with butler service and four-poster beds. Some cabins have French balconies and proper walkout verandas with their staterooms. Cabin configurations and facilities vary from line to line, and ship to ship within a fleet, so it is wise to get all the details on how your stateroom will look before you book a cruise. Lower deck cabins have fixed windows, still providing a view, albeit at water level for those traveling on a budget.
Entertainment is low-key onboard as the major attraction is the passing scenery to see on both banks of the river and ports of call which you can view from your balcony or on top deck. The intimate nature of these riverships also means you'll soon get to know your fellow passengers so you certainly won't get lost in the crowd of that of an ocean going vessel.

All meals are included, with many lines offering complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, plus unlimited tea and coffee. Some lines are all-inclusive and, in addition to an open bar, they also cover gratuities. There is generally an open-seating policy, so you can sit where you want.

Unlike ocean going vessels, meals can be fairly regimented, meaning, due to the small size of the galley, there is only one sitting for breakfast, lunch and dinner as the norm. However, some lines are more flexible with their meal timings than others. On most ships, lighter meals can be enjoyed in the lounge, or outside on the deck, and some vessels have additional specialty restaurants.

On river cruising, the onboard experience is more laid-back than it is on ocean going voyages, and there is no formal dress code. Like those of the larger ocean going ships, there's usually a captain's reception and gala dinner, where some people opt for the more formal attire, but it's not obligatory.

Perhaps the most important packing tips, are to take layers of clothing to cope with unpredictable weather and comfortable shoes or sneakers, as many tours involve walking on cobblestones or uneven surfaces.
