Mediterranean Cruises
Cruising the Mediterranean gives travelers access to some of the most popular cities in Europe, combined with the ease and comfort of cruising. The Mediterranean is divided into the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Sea is bordered by 21 countries and is virtually land locked with the exception of the Strait of Gibralter leading to the Atlantic Ocean. To the east, the Mediterranean links up with the Sea of Marmara and Black Sea. Cruising the region is a great way to visit or explore several countries with just one trip. Search for Mediterranean cruises here.

The Mediterranean region accounts for roughly three-fourths of all cruises to Europe. The British Isles and Northern Europe make up the balance of cruises to Europe. There are plenty of opportunities to experience the variety of ports, shore excursions, culture and of course, some of your favorite or new culinary dishes as many itineraries last seven days or longer.

Sun-worshippers can immerse themselves in the rays on the beaches along the French Riviera in famous named towns of St. Tropez, Cannes and Nice. And history buffs can admire the ancient sites offered in Rome, Athens and Ephesus. From taking in the stunning architecture of Florence one day to strolling through the botanical gardens of Cannes the next, these many ports of call on a cruise allows its passengers to explore so much.
Western Mediterranean trips typically call at the ports in Spain, France and Italy. Often-visited ports include Barcelona, Nice, Florence and Rome. Cities in Portugal, Monaco, with Tunisia and Morocco as  potential stops also. Some of Europe's most majestic cities were built along the Mediterranean boasting not only its beautiful beaches and scenery, but are also renowned for their cultural attractions as well.

Eastern Mediterranean itineraries include the countries of Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and also Italy once again. Italy's central location in the Mediterranean makes it logistically convenient for trips to either the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean. Often, cruises to the Holy Land are combined with Eastern Mediterranean ports as well as those to Israel and Egypt. If Greece is your destination of choice, there are many voyages with shore excursions that focus specifically on the many islands in Greece and the Aegean Sea. Walk where Socrates and Aristotle once roamed and experience the awe of the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis.

Explore Istanbul, Turkey, formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, an ancient city that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait whose cultural influences is of the many empires that once ruled there. It is the country's economic, cultural and historic center as well as the most populous city of Turkey and its capital. Visit the 6th-century Hagia Sophia (532–537), built by Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great and was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years. It was originally a church, later became a mosque, and since 1935 a it has been a historic museum.
If your desires are a little more modern and you want something a bit more stylish, then head for Monaco's seaside gambling district, where the Casino de Monte Carlo, located in the chic principality of Monaco, the former home of Hollywood star Grace Kelly, who became the Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in April 1956, and where the 150-year-old Beaux Arts landmark that inspired a James Bond movie, provides the right atmosphere for  high-stakes gaming and jaw-dropping tours of its elegant, marbled interior.

Not far from Monte Carlo, the French Riviera also offers historic points of interest, like Cannes, famous for its annual international film festival, in addition to some high-end shopping and posh gambling halls. Additionally, throughout the 1920s, this stretch of sand was notorious for drawing the famous writer Ernest Hemingway and Jazz Age luminary F. Scott Fitzgerald to its shores. Today, you can tour their  favorite waterfront cafes and casinos while in port.
The Mediterranean is rich with cultures and countries to experience such that the potential activities seem limitless. For example, on a seven-day cruise, you will find yourself waking up in as many as three or four different countries giving you a variety of languages, cuisine and shore excursions. The  countries that touch upon the Mediterranean have rich histories dating back centuries and even thousands of years. A shore excursion to the Great Pyramids of Giza or the Acropolis in Athens date back thousands of years to explore today.

In Italy, you can explore the remnants of the ancient Roman empire in Rome's numerous archaeological sites of the Forum, Colosseum, Circus Maximus and many more. Travel down the coast to Pompeii, the city buried under meters of ash and pumice during the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and witness the preserved excavated ruins of streets and houses you can freely explore.

Venture to the Holy Land on a shore excursion and visit Jerusalem, a city that is central to three world religions today. Visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the church built on the traditional site of Jesus' Crucifixion and burial. Visit the Western Wall , the last remnant of the Second Temple, which is considered the most holy site in Judaism. And then there is the Noble Sanctuary, better known as the Dome of the Rock, that is probably Jerusalem’s most recognizable landmark. Its golden dome, at the center of the Temple Mount, dominates the landscape and is a sacred place for both, Muslims and Jews.

Additionally, there's plenty of culture to experience in the present. Wet your taste buds while dining on pasta carbonara in Rome one day, and venture to Tunis, where the French boulevards are lined with eucalyptus trees and restaurants serving spicy cuisine such as lamb with couscous, or stewed meats and baklava. Then listen to street musicians in Barcelona, Spain over tapas the day after.

Beach afficianados won't be disappointed either by the fabulous beaches washed upon by the Mediterranean. Marseille, located on the French Riviera, is the second largest city in France is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, hiking and rock climbing. Let's not forget Santorini either with its whitewashed villages dotting the the mountains along the coast in the background and beaches of black, red and white sand lapped by the crystalline waters of the sea.

With so many things to do and explore, it is no wonder that the Mediterranean captures 75% of the European cruise market.
